Healthcare workers at Bayshore Health Care Solutions have voted in favour of Union representation, bringing 85 new members into the UFCW Locals 175 & 633 family.

The Bayshore workers reached out to UFCW Local 175 organizers in the pursuit of better job security, working conditions, wages, benefits, health and safety, and respect. While the drive had its challenges, the workers were quick in gaining support and were elated to see a victory.
“We welcome the Healthcare workers of Bayshore to the Union,” said President Kelly Tosato. “Healthcare workers bring dignity and compassion to their clients’ lives every day, and those workers deserve better working conditions across the board. And as their Union, we are here to support them in achieving that goal.”
In securing this milestone, the new members are looking forward to the next steps and working toward their first collective agreement as members of UFCW Local 175’s Health, Office, and Professional Employees (HOPE) Sector.
The new bargaining unit aids clients who are struggling with illnesses like cancer, dementia, rheumatoid arthritis, and diabetes, injury recovery, and other community and homecare support to allow their clients to remain independent and healthy.
There are many reasons why healthcare workers decide to join UFCW Local 175. Health care workers take pride in caring for others. Often, non-Union employers will try to tell employees that joining a Union will affect patient care in a negative way.
The Bayshore healthcare workers were undeterred in bringing the Union into their workplace and chose to fight for better working conditions that allowed them to focus on what’s important: being able to keep themselves and patients safe.
As new members of UFCW Local 175, Bayshore healthcare workers can rest easy knowing they have a union that will advocate for their rights and good quality, affordable public health care.
