On March 25, 2025, UFCW Local 175 welcomed 60 new members to our Health, Office, and Professional employees (HOPE) sector. Workers at Carolina Retirement Home in Perth voted to join our largest growing sectors of unionized workers.

“Healthcare workers unionize for several key reasons and are mainly to do with the desire to protect both themselves and the quality of care they provide,” said President Kelly Tosato.

These workers are employed as PSWs, RPNs, RNs, housekeepers, service workers and kitchen staff. After speaking with UFCW Local 175 organizers, the workers decided to pursue certification and become Union members so they could work toward building a workplace with more respect and fairness for all staff.

“Healthcare workers often face dangerously high workloads. Our Union is a strong advocate for healthcare workers, lobbying the government to enact better and enforceable staffing ratios to ensure patient safety and reduce burnout. We know what our members experience day-to-day in healthcare, and our staff works hard to build strong collective agreements with language that protects our members’ rights, gives them fair wages, and solid benefits,” said Sandra Ashcroft, Director of the HOPE LTC/RET region.

With their UFCW Local 175membership, these workers will get to have a say in workplace policies that directly affect their jobs—such as scheduling, safety procedures, and protocols.

From access to PPE to clean break rooms, fair wages, good benefits, and much more, UFCW Local 175 consistently fights for better working conditions for our members.

Congratulations to our newest members at Carolina Retirement Home!

Welcome to your Union!
