UFCW Canada endorses White Paper on the Status of Trans & Gender Diverse People
February 16, 2024
As a union, UFCW Canada has a long history of advocating for 2SLGBTQIA+ rights. We were proud to advocate for the passing of Bill C-16, which added gender identity and gender expression as protected grounds to the Canadian Human Rights Act, and added sections to the Criminal Code of Canada which target hate speech and sentencing for hate crimes.
Since 2023, we’ve witnessed the governments of Saskatchewan, New Brunswick, and more recently Alberta, roll back the rights of trans and gender diverse students.
UFCW Canada recognizes the ongoing and rising harms faced by trans and gender-diverse people in Canada when it comes to discrimination, stigma, access to health care, and additional socio-economic indicators of health and wellbeing.
UFCW Canada endorses all recommendations contained in the White Paper on the Status of Trans and Gender Diverse People, released by Member of Parliament Randall Garrison.
Sign and share Petition e-4666 to help protect and defend the rights of Trans and gender-diverse persons in Canada.
Petition e-4666 will be open for signatures until March 7, 2024.
In December, UFCW Canada released a statement with Dylana Thompson, UFCW Member from Local 232, who was the principal researcher for the White Paper of the Status of Trans and Gender Diverse People. Find that statement here.
