March 28, 2019
On March 24, 2019, the 300 members working at Safeway in Thunder Bay achieved a new collective agreement that will see them through May 2022.
Full-time employees get a lump sum payment of $500. Part-time employees who are eligible for the group insurance plan receive a lump sum of between $300 to $400, depending on hours worked as detailed in the agreement. Top rates will increase by 30 cents per hour in 2020, and by 40 cents per hour in 2021.
Effective June 2020, employer contributions to the Safeway workers’ dental plan will increase to 32 cents per hour worked, up from 30 cents.
Additional language added to the agreement addresses the creation of a separate collective agreement in the event that Sobeys, which owns the Safeway banner, converts the existing store to another banner.
