Sobeys Toronto Ratifies

New members at Sobeys in Toronto ratify a first collective agreement to secure wage increases, language improvements and the benefits of unionization.

The new members at Sobeys Capital Inc. in Toronto unanimously ratified their first collective agreement on January 22, 2026 with a two-year term. These workers now have all the benefits and protections of belonging to UFCW Locals 175 & 633.
Part-time members at end rate will receive wage increases of 50 cents per hour, and part-time on the grid will receive increases ranging from 50 cents to $1.75 per hour.
Full time end rate increases by 50 cents at ratification retroactive to October 1, 2024. Then another 50-cent increase on January 22, 2027 retroactive to October 1, 2025 to equal a $1.00 increase to end rate.
Employees who are appointed to act as Meat or Seafood Manager will receive a $1.00 per hour premium.
Prior to ratification, both full and part-time workers were paid minimum wage, only receiving increases when minimum wage was adjusted. With this contract, these members on grid received increases of 50 cents to $1.75 per hour.
There will be a signing bonus paid in the amounts of: full-time – $400, part-time averaging 24 hours – $200, and part-time averaging 16 hours – $75.
Lump sum payments will also be received on the second anniversary in the amount of: full-time – $300, part-time averaging 24 hours $150, and part-time averaging 16 hours $50.
Workers will participate in an employer pension plan, and will be provided with a medical/dental/vision plan with a shared contribution cost.
Other improvements and gains include:
- Civic holiday will be included in the list of stat holidays for all employees.
- There will be a shoe allowance of $75.00 every 12 months for full-time and part-time workers will receive $55.00 every 24 months.
- Improvement to vacation entitlement.
- Sick days.
- Premiums for overtime reduced from 44 hours to 40 hours in a week.
These workers will now enjoy the benefits of belonging to a Union and the protection of a collective agreement including a grievance process, seniority recall language and just cause protection.
