The members at Maplehurst Bakeries (formerly Weston Bakery) in Cobourg ratified a new collective agreement on November 26, 2016.

The new agreement solidified the expansion of the plant and introduction of a new line that will produce different varieties of finished Cakes. Traditionally, this plant has always produced Fruit Cake on a seasonal basis, employing approximately 40 full-time and 40 seasonal employees. The new Cake line brings a level of stable and consistent production not seen in past years to our Members.

The first significant and very positive change occurred on February 4, 2017, when the employer promoted all Seasonal employees to full-time employment. The company has also stated to the Union that it is their expectation that the line will create 40-50 jobs. Production on this new line has commenced and there is hope that an additional new Cake line may be added at some point in 2017.
