As is too often the case in the health care sector to reach a collective agreement, employees across the province may need to take part in the Hospital Labour Disputes Arbitration Act (HLDAA).

HLDAA is used in the healthcare sector when parties cannot reach an agreement and the workers are unable to take strike action because they are considered essential.

For the members at Canterbury Place, the employer was unwilling to agree to a two-year term with 3.5% wage increases in each year. Through HLDAA, however, the members were awarded just that: a two-year term with 3.5% paid retroactive for hours worked since October 9, 2024, and another 3.5% paid retroactive for hours worked since October 9, 2025.

In addition, the Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) classification will see a wage adjustment of $0.50 per hour. And all members will benefit from improved premiums including an additional $0.10 per hour for the night shift, and $0.05 per hour for weekends.

Members will benefit from improved vision care benefits covering up to $300, and an increase to $0.50 per hour worked, up from $0.40, for paid leave days. Plus, members will now be entitled to a fifth week of paid vacation after 15 years’ service effective January 1, 2027.
