Workers at Toronto Community Hostels organize to join UFCW Local 175
May 8, 2025

On February 26, 2025, the workers at Toronto Community Hostels voted to join UFCW Local 175. This group of community outreach workers wanted to change the working conditions in their workplace in order to improve their day-to-day work-lives. Working as Outreach, Settlement, Case, and Housing workers, Chefs, and Cleaners within our communities is not an easy job and these workers deserve a Union to fight for them. Now, as members of UFCW Local 175, they will have the chance to negotiate for higher compensation and better workplace protections.
“Strong community services depend on strong community workers. These employees are dedicated and give a great deal of themselves doing the work they do, but they’ve been stretched too thin for too long,” said President Tosato. “By joining UFCW, they’re standing together to advocate for fair pay, safer working conditions, and more support to do their jobs effectively.”
With the Union behind them, these workers hope to bring about positive changes to address issues that have plagued the workplace in the past. As a priority, our newest members look forward to negotiating toward standardized pay, improved mental health support, fair workplace practices, job security, and a formal grievance process.
As more workers across the community service sector join Unions, the power those workers have at the bargaining table grows too. If you, or someone you know, work in community support and are struggling with your working conditions, reach out to our Organizers to talk about how the Union can help.
Congratulations and welcome to your Union!
