Compass Group employees at George Brown achieve new agreement
October 3, 2019
UFCW Local 175 members employed by Compass Group at George Brown College ratified a new collective agreement on September 30, 2019.
On the last day of negotiations, the Union Negotiating Committee requested assistance from a Conciliation Officer to deal with pay equity issues. The agreement achieved by the Committee includes a number of improvements that benefit the Members at Compass Group.
Members will receive an initial raise of 25 cents per hour. This increase will be paid retroactively for all hours worked since the expiry of the previous agreement. Wages will also go up by 20 cents per hour as of the date of ratification. Then, employees will receive 25 cents per hour in year two, and another 25 cents per hour in year three. The premium paid to the Baker classification improves to 50 cents per hour, up from 30 cents.
In addition, the Committee secured language to prevent non-bargaining unit employees from doing bargaining unit work unless it is for the immediate and legitimate needs of the business.
Bereavement improves to provide one day paid leave for the death of an aunt, uncle, niece or nephew. Plus, members can take an additional unpaid day if required.
Language regarding Steward representation for the members at Compass Group improves as well. Provisions ensure a Steward or another member of the bargaining unit must be present when management meets with an employee, especially in cases of discipline.
The employer will recognize any holidays legislated by the province and add them to the agreement as a stat holiday. Lastly, the company will pay 100% of the negotiating committee wages going forward.
This agreement covers 11 full-time and nine part-time Compass Group employees at the downtown George Brown campus.
Union Negotiating Committee: Maria (Mama) Johnson and Union Rep Orsola Augurusa.
