Mondelez members ratify wage and language improvements

The membership at Mondelez Canada in Toronto have ratified a new three-year collective agreement. Approximately 240 members of UFCW Local 175 work at the Mondelez plant and the new agreement secures a number of solid improvements.
In year one, members receive a raise of 4%, paid retroactive for hours worked since the expiry of the previous agreement. Members will then see increases of 3% in year two, and 4% in year three.
Premiums will improve in the first year to provide an additional $0.10 per hour for the afternoon, night, and weekend shifts, and in year two the weekend premium will improve by another $0.05 per hour.
Other monetary improvements put more money back in members’ pockets through increased boot and tool allowances.
In terms of health and welfare, members at Mondelez will see improvements to their Life insurance as well as their Accidental Death & Dismemberment insurance, which both increase by $25,000. Members receive $500 more toward their Extended Health Benefit program coverage, $50 more for eyeglasses/contacts, $50 more for eye exams, and a $50 increase to children’s vision care coverage as well.
Members at Mondelez wanted significant improvements across language in their agreement. Their Union Negotiating Committee secured voluntary severance packages to be offered by seniority, improved language on the use of agency workers, language and a commitment from the employer on filling open full-time vacancies, and job filling language regarding Technical Operators.
The Committee also achieved a number of language improvements regarding job posting procedures, a training matrix for trainees, and additional bereavement entitlement. Members also benefit from sick days no longer being deducted from their overtime, and Maintenance apprentices are now eligible for overtime.
Other language improvements address vacation payout and the creation of a back-up technical operator position. Lastly, the employer has agreed to increase its annual contributions to the UFCW Local 175 Training & Education Fund.
