The Local Union would like to welcome 25 new members who work full-time at Waterloo Heights Senior Apartments who recently voted to join the Union.
Waterloo Heights employees wanted to join the Union to improve a number of their working conditions. Wage increases over the years for the workers were minimal, and stopped altogether at one point until they received a small increase again this year. In addition, the employees felt that favouritism and a lack of respect made the work environment unpleasant.
From losing out on vacations, unfair treatment, and their voices not being heard, these workers decided enough was enough.
While the campaign took a couple of months to reach and inform all of the employees, once the application went in the group was excited about the possibilities that joining the Union could bring and that energy and hope led them to win their vote.
“The employees at Waterloo Heights held strong and stuck together, and made the great decision to join UFCW Local 175,” said President Kelly Tosato. “Their courage and determination led them down a road that will help them build a better life going forward and it’s a great example of what can be achieved when workers stand together as one voice.”
Waterloo Heights is an assisted living home for seniors where the newest members of UFCW Local 175 work as housekeepers, dietary aides, cooks, on-call attendants, and maintenance. The members will now begin the process for their first collective agreement, starting with a proposal meeting.
