Whenever you can, try to shop Union-made to support UFCW Locals 175 & 633 members and Unionized workers across Canada.

Members of UFCW Locals 175 & 633 work across almost every sector of the economy. They manufacture, process, package, and deliver many products that people buy on a regular basis. Not only that, but tens of thousands of Local Union members work in unionized grocery stores, pharmacies, and other retail outlets throughout Ontario.

It’s an important time to be supporting Canadian workers. When it comes to buying Canadian products, the Competition Bureau of Canada sets standards for product labels. And here’s what they mean:

100% Canadian is exactly what it says.
Product of Canada: At least 98% of the total direct costs of producing or manufacturing the good have been incurred in Canada.
Made in Canada: At least 51% of the total direct costs of producing or manufacturing the good have been incurred in Canada.

For both ‘Product of Canada’ and ‘Made in Canada’ labels, the last substantial transformation of the good must have occurred in Canada as well.

If products don’t meet these thresholds, the Competition Bureau recommends labelling such as “Assembled in Canada with imported parts” or more specific such as “Made in Canada with 60% Canadian content and 40% imported content.”

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency requires that all prepackaged food products sold in Canada are labelled with the name and address of the company responsible for the product, such as the importer or manufacturer. When a food product is wholly manufactured outside of Canada, the label must show that the product is imported.

Shop in Unionized stores where UFCW Locals 175 & 633 members work!

Try to shop in Unionized stores whenever possible! Look for Loblaw and Metro banners stores, Rexall, and some Sobeys banners. There are many independent stores that also employ unionized workers, so it’s always a good idea to check with the store and find out if you’re not sure.
