Community Health workers in Toronto at Sherbourne Health Centre ratify a three agreement, avoiding strike action and achieving significant wage increases and improvements to language.

After a difficult set of negotiations with a strong strike mandate in place, the HOPE Sector members at Sherbourne Health Centre in Toronto ratified a new three-year agreement on June 26, 2025.

The wages for these community health workers will increase by 12% over the term of the agreement for all classifications retroactive to the date of expiry.

Benefit improvements will see an increase in the Health Spending Account from $400.00 to $600.00.

Language improvements include:

  • Additional float day bringing them to a total of five days per year.
  • Severance language improves from a maximum of 26 weeks to 30 weeks.
  • Daily maximum for meal expenses/per diem will be $80.00 in total rather than having a separate per diem for each meal.
  • “Chosen family” will be added to bereavement language. Prior to this round of bargaining the employer had the sole discretion to honour a chosen family member for paid bereavement. This is now a negotiated entitlement in the contract language.

Union negotiating committee: Sandra Jackson, Keaton Kwok and Maureen Noonan. Union representative: Sabrina Qadir.
