Earlier in October, the members of UFCW Local 175 working at Norpro Security in Sault Ste. Marie ratified a new collective agreement. In this round of bargaining, the Union Negotiating Committee achieved numerous improvements to language and health and welfare coverage for the members.

New language includes a Holiday Bank provision which allows full-time employees to bank Statutory Holiday pay to be used as vacation days at a later date. The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is now included as a paid Statutory Holiday for these members as well.

Further new language defines parameters around a new classification for temporary emergency response deployments. The language includes how members are hired and/or selected for these deployments as well as terms for payment, accommodations, meal per diems, and more.

The Norpro Security collective agreement contains Minimum Wage Plus (MW+) language, which is an important way to protect rates of pay for our members. This language ensures that if and when minimum wage goes up, members will see an increase that ensures their rate stays ahead of that minimum wage rate.

In term of health and welfare improvements, the Union Negotiating Committee secured numerous increases. Members will receive $1,000 each in their Health Spending Account. Coverage improves to provide a $10,000 lifetime maximum for fertility drugs and a $15,000 lifetime maximum for fertility treatments, and a $15,000 lifetime maximum for gender affirming care. Plus, the list of excluded drugs has been removed from the plan, and the prescription drug co-insurance also improves to 100%, up from 50%, with some exceptions.

Flat life insurance amounts is now $30,000, up from the previous $5,000. Vision care coverage improves to $300 per 24-month period, up from $100. Dental coverage now provides a $1,500 overall maximum per year, up from $1,000, as well as improved co-insurance amounts for Level 1 and Level 2 dental claims.

Members will also benefit from an improved Safety Boot allowance of $150 per year, up from $100.
