Markey Family Funeral ratifies

Markey Family Funeral ratifies significant wage increases and improved language for workers in Hamilton.
The Markey Family Funeral Homes Limited in Hamilton unanimously ratified a three-year agreement on March 23, 2025.
On the basis of moving from “years of service” to “Years as a Licensed Funeral Director” the wage increases for these HOPE Sector members in Year 1 will range from 3.15% to 44.75% with the average being 16% across all classifications, retroactive to date of expiry. Moving from years of service, to years as a licensed funeral director is a big achievement for these workers as many members have years of experience but were being paid significantly less. In both Year 2 and Year 3 there will be a 2.5% general wage increase.
Language improvements include:
- The suit allowance will increase from $300 to $350 annually.
- Leave of absence requests will not be unreasonably denied.
- The sunset clause will be reduced from 36 months to 24 months.
- Members cannot be permanently transferred between locations without mutual agreement. Previously this only applied to workers hired prior to 1991.
- Introduction of Job posting language.
