Welcome to employees at Queenchester Terrace who voted to Join the Union
May 21, 2021
UFCW Local 175 is happy to welcome the approximately 15 new members from Queenchester Terrace to the UFCW family.
In late April, the workers at Queenchester Terrace in St. Catharines contacted Local 175 to learn how they could join the Union to improve their working conditions. Within just a few weeks, these workers had signed Union cards, had their vote scheduled, and won their vote to become Union members.
Shortly, they will start the process of bargaining their first contract. Topping the list of priorities for these workers in their first round of collective bargaining are:
- Better wages,
- Paid sick days,
- Addressing harassment, and;
- Improved health and safety.
In terms of wages, the hardworking healthcare workers are looking to improve from minimum wage, which all classifications are currently set at. There are also concerns of favouritism when it comes to who gets raises. In addition, the workers have zero paid sick days and often feel overworked. Employees at Queenchester Terrace provide healthcare services in a retirement and group home setting for individuals with physical and cognitive challenges.
These new members work as Personal Support Workers, Dietary Aides, and Housekeeping staff. Their job tasks include supporting their residents through personal care and physical support, meal preparations, medication assistance, cleaning, and more.
Congratulations to the workers at Queenchester Terrace for taking an important step forward in improving their working lives. As healthcare workers, these newest members become part of the Local Union’s Health, Office, and Professional Employees (HOPE) Sector.
Welcome to Your Union.
