Valhalla Inn members ratifyMembers of UFCW Local 175 employed at the Valhalla Inn in Thunder Bay ratified a new collective agreement on September 10, 2018.

The parties met in conciliation to deal with wage increases following this year’s increased minimum wage.

Wages will improve by 1% immediately and that is retroactive for hours worked since the expiry of the previous agreement. Then, wages will increase by 1% every 6 months for the term of the contract. That will provide a total improvement of 6% over three years. Employees making more than their classification rate will receive lump sum payments in lieu of rate increases.

Members now have Long-Term Disability (LTD) coverage included in their benefits. Short-Term Disability, however, is no longer part of their benefit package.

A new letter of understanding establishes a Kitchen Committee. The committee will be comprised of two Unionized employee representatives and two employer representatives. The group will meet quarterly and employee’s time spent on the committee will be considered time worked.

The three-year contract covers 125 hospitality workers in the bargaining unit at the hotel.

Union Negotiating Committee: Devida Matchett, Joe Sgambelluri, Lucille Wappner, and Union Rep Tracy Stubbs.
