The Briton House members ratify

UFCW Local 175 members working at The Briton House Retirement Home ratified a new collective agreement recently.

All classifications will see a 2% raise in each year of the three-year agreement term. In addition, all classifications except Cook & Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs) receive an adjustment of 20 cents per hour. Those Briton House employees classified as Cook and RPN receive an adjustment of 15 cents per hour as of ratification.

Members benefit from increased shift premiums as well. This includes $1.60 per hour, up from $1.50, for Lead Hand, and $2 per hour for Red Seal Certified employees.

Employer contributions to the workers’ pension plan increase to 91 cents, up from 85 cents, per hour worked. The employer-paid premiums to the workers’ health and welfare plan also increase at the request of the Plan administrators. Vision care coverage improves to $200, up from $150, as well. The uniform allowance improves to $140 per year, up from $130.

Language improvements address vacation scheduling to ensure the employer allows vacation requests based on seniority.

Lastly, the employer will pay $400, up from $300, toward the cost of printing copies of the collective agreement for the employees.

This collective agreement, ratified by the members on May 8, 2019, covers more than 120 health care workers at The Briton House Retirement Home in Toronto.
