Statement on Violent Attacks at Mosques in New Zealand
March 15, 2019
On behalf of the members of UFCW Locals 175 & 633, I want to extend our deepest condolences to the friends and families of those killed and wounded in the horrific act of hate and violence targeting people of the Islamic faith in Christchurch, New Zealand.
It was only two years ago, that we saw similar hatred, intolerance, and cowardice take the lives of six people at a mosque in Quebec. It is heart-wrenching and terrifying to hear of another violent attack taking the lives of so many. I condemn this violence, which the Prime Minister of New Zealand is rightfully calling an act of terrorism.
Again, I offer our most sincere condolences to everyone affected by these tragic events, particularly those of the Islamic faith around the world.
Our world is a much better place when we work together, respect each other, and show solidarity both in good times and in times of grief and hardship. To any member of our Union or their families having trouble during this time, please reach out to support services. If you’re not sure how to start or where to look, contact the Members’ Assistance Program, or call them at 416-977-6888 or 1-877-801-7762.
