Sobeys Meat department workers achieve certification after two years at the board

In June of 2022, Sobeys employees (meat department) at the Queensway store in the City of Etobicoke reached out to our organizing department with the hopes of unionizing their workplace.

On September 29 & 30, 2022 workers at Sobeys Capital Inc in Etobicoke voted in favour of joining the thousands of grocery store meat department workers as members of UFCW Local 633. Although though the vote was successful, there were some challenges that the Union and workers faced during this time. Under Section 8.1 of the Ontario Labour Relations Act the Employer challenged the unions description of the bargaining unit.

But, we are happy to report that after two years the Union has come out on top and successfully achieved certification for these workers.

Our newest members work as meat cutters and meat clerks and hope to achieve better wages, job security, benefits and health & safety through the bargaining process.

“UFCW Locals 175 & 633 has been representing workers in the grocery retail sector for decades, we understand the struggles they face and will work diligently to ensure these workers are treated fairly and ensure their rights are upheld.” said President Tosato.
