Significant wage improvements highlight North Bay Holiday Inn Express Negotiations
December 7, 2022
On December 5, 2022, more than 30 full and part-time employees at the Holiday Inn Express in North Bay voted in favour of a new three-year contract.
The term of this renewal collective agreement is October 31, 2022 to October 30, 2025, and includes significant improvements for our membership.
Many sets of negotiations are difficult; however, since the employer and Union were far apart on wages and other monetary issues, the parties turned to a ministry appointed conciliator to help with the process. This, in turn, allowed the Union Negotiating Committee to achieve a good settlement for the members.
Over the term of the agreement, members will see an 11% increase in wages with the end rates of pay increasing by $1.75 per hour, and minimum wage plus protection applies to the mid-range grid rates. Members also benefit from a new lead-hand premium, payments retroactive to the expiry of the previous agreement, and signing bonuses for both full and part time at $100 and $50 respectively.
Other monetary improvements include:
- Clearer benefit entitlement for new full-time employees;
- Increases to the UFCW Training and Education fund;
- 100% employer-funded contributions to the health and welfare trust;
- Footwear allowances for all employees, and;
- Enhanced vacation after 15 years of service.
Other changes and language improvements include:
- A condensed one-year wage grid which will allow employees the reach the top rates quicker, and;
- Improved language in the way of disciplinary protections.
Union Negotiating Committee: Meghan Hodgins, Mercedes Montgomery, Natasha Patterson. Union Representative: Richard Eberhardt.
