Rona announces Sudbury store closure
November 6, 2018
For Immediate Release: November 6, 2018
Sudbury, ON – On November 4th, employees at the Rona hardware store located in Sudbury ON, were informed that in mid-January, store operations will cease and all employees will be put on long-term layoff. Included in this are fourteen members of UFCW Local 175.
“This announcement is very disappointing,” says Local 175 President Shawn Haggerty. “The long service, hard working members at Rona in Sudbury have served their employer and community well. They deserve better than such short notice on the loss of their jobs.”
The collective agreement in place guarantees enhanced severance payments for the members. As well, representatives of the Union are meeting with the employer to discuss continuation of benefits and labour adjustment programs.
“We will do everything in our power to help our members move forward after the store closes,” added Haggerty. “We will continue to ensure the terms of the collective agreement are upheld.”
UFCW Locals 175 & 633 represents more than 70,000 workers across many industries in Ontario including the manufacturing, retail, healthcare and service sectors.
