Retail workers at Zero Waste Bulk in Waterloo join the Union

July 19, 2021

Welcome to six new members of UFCW Locals 175 & 633 from Zero Waste Bulk in Waterloo who recently voted 100% in favour of joining the Union.

Zero Waste Bulk is a retail bulk grocery store which employs several full-time and several part-time employees who stock and organize product on the shelves, assist customers with product information, and scan purchases at checkout.

During the organizing drive, the issues that arose as key for these workers were fair wages, better scheduling, health and safety, and better transparency overall at the workplace.

Like many essential workers, these employees often work understaffed, which leaves extra work for those on shift. Employees were staying past close to complete work without additional compensation for that time. As a result, work-life balance has also been difficult for the employees because they found it difficult to plan around an uncertain end of shift.

Congratulations to the employees at Zero Waste Bulk for taking an important step toward improving their working lives.
