Peel Region deciding whether to open stores on stat holidays
February 6, 2018
Your Union believes that retail workers deserve holidays too!
In November 2017, York Region Council pushed through legislation to allow retail stores to be open 364 days a year. They did that without any public consultation. Your Union, alongside the Toronto York Labour Council and other local Unions, continues to fight this bylaw in York.
Recently, the Region of Peel launched similar discussions on whether to allow retail stores to open on statutory holidays in Caledon, Brampton, and Mississauga.
The Region developed a survey to take the public’s pulse on the matter, perhaps learning from the mistakes made by York Region last year.
While the survey does have a clear bias to allowing stores to open, your Union believes it is important that residents and Union members of Peel make their voices heard.
You can take the quick survey here: https://www.surveymonkey.ca/r/PeelRBHA-Survey
In addition, you can also contact your Peel Region Councillors directly to let them know how you feel. A list of Councillors can be found here: https://www.peelregion.ca/council/councill/
