On December 9 and 10, 2021 110 new members from The Salvation Army York Housing and Support Services voted in favour of joining UFCW Locals 175 & 633.

Our newest members work between three Salvation Army locations in the York and Durham Region, and provide support in these communities through housing and support services at not-for-profit shelters.

Services they provide include a housing and settlement programs through which our members help clients secure work and housing. These programs help meet basic needs by providing a safe place, a warm bed, hot meals, and tools to enhance stability.

“Over the six-week campaign these members showed true resolve in fighting for basic employment rights and have sent a clear message to their employer. Their strength will go a long way to helping them achieve a safe, equitable and secure working environment going forward,” says President Shawn Haggerty.

These members approached Local 175 & 633 to secure seniority rights, better wages and working conditions; to eliminate favouritism; and to hold their employer accountable to the commitments they have made to their employees.

“We welcome these new members and look forward to seeing all of the good work they do so they can continue to provide much-need services that allow their communities to thrive,” said President Haggerty.
