Members at the John Howard Society ratify
March 29, 2018
The 34 full-time employees at the John Howard Society of Waterloo-Wellington ratified a new agreement on March 20, 2018.
Bargaining for this contract required meetings with a Ministry of Labour (MOL) Conciliation Officer. Despite a recent arbitration win in the Union’s favour, the company continued to restrict the Union’s access to the workplace. In addition, the parties could not come to an agreement regarding verified sickness/doctor’s notes. The parties resolved these issues through the conciliation process.
The ratified agreement contains wage improvements of 1.5% in year one, 1.75% in year two, and 2% in year three. Now, language includes flex time provisions to cover temporary and occasional shifts in the schedule.
Employees receive two additional paid days leave per year. Lastly, the employer will contribute toward the UFCW Local 175 Training & Education Fund.
Union Negotiating Committee: Mark Breaton, Marisa Galer, Conny Muhic, and Union Rep Jason Hanley.
