Members at North Park Nursing avoid interest arbitration: ratify new agreement
December 2, 2019
The more than 90 Union members employed at North Park Nursing Home in Toronto achieved a new two-year collective agreement recently.
Bargaining for this new agreement at North Park Nursing Home required an application to the Hospital Labour Disputes Arbitration Act (HLDAA) process to resolve several issues. The parties, however, achieved an agreement before the HLDAA hearing date, and the members ratified the detail on November 28, 2019.
The previous agreement for these workers expired at the end of July 2018. As a result, wage increases of 1.4% for the first year will be paid for hours worked since August 1, 2018. Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs) receive an additional adjustment of 10 cents per hour. Second year increases of 1.5% will be effective as of August 1, 2019. In addition, RPNs will receive an additional 25 cents per hour. Employees with a Dietary Certificate receive a premium of 10 cents per hour. Plus, the weekend premium improves to provide an additional 5 cents per hour on top of an employee’s regular rate.
The Union Negotiating Committee at North Park Nursing bargained successfully to ensure employee contributions toward the health and welfare plan will not go up during the course of this agreement.
Improved language addresses the lay-off and recall process, and a new sunset clause regarding discipline now forms part of the agreement. Lastly, the employer will contribute $300 to the UFCW Local 175 Training & Education Fund.
