Local 175 welcomes new members from the Duke of Devonshire Retirement Residence
October 6, 2016
Congratulations to the workers at the Duke of Devonshire in Ottawa who voted in favour of joining UFCW Local 175.
Employees at this retirement residence wanted a number of improvements in their working conditions, which prompted them to contact the Union. The approximately 75 new members join the ever-growing HOPE sector of Local 175. Members are employed as R.P.N.s, P.S.W.s, kitchen staff, housekeepers and reception.
“The workers were looking to gain wage increases, job security and achieve better health and welfare benefits.” explained Local 175 Organizer Amy Tran. “Health and safety concerns, harassment and favoritism also played a part in why they wanted Union representation.”
These workers wanted the opportunity to have their voices heard and they now have the strength of 70,000 members behind them as members of UFCW Locals 175 & 633.
