In-depth look at case against Metron Construction
August 8, 2012
A Health & Safey Ontario’s Workplace Safety & Prevention newsletter from July 24, provided an in-depth look at the case against Metron Construction.
Charges against Metron, both criminal and under health & safety legislation, stem from a workplace accident on Christmas Eve 2009 involving six workers on a swing-stage scaffold. Four of those workers died and a fifth sustained serious injuries. The sixth worker also fell but his fall arrest system stopped him.
The president of Metro pled guilty to criminal charges, setting a precent in Ontario. And on July 13, the corporation was fined $200,000 – despite the crown prosecutor asking for a $1 million penalty.
