On April 5 and 6, 2022, the 91 workers at Metro Val East in Val Caron voted electronically to join thousands of other Metro workers at stores across the province as members of Locals 175 & 633.

Metro Val Est employees join the unionThe Metro Val Est store went corporate a couple of years ago and the employees were looking to secure regular wage increases, a pension plan, and benefits for all employees. The store currently employs approximately 18 full-time and 73 part-time employees working as cashiers, clerks, hot meal replacement and deli staff, bakery clerks, meat cutters and wrappers, and scanning co-ordinators.

The members took part in their first proposal meeting on May 1, 2022, and are eager to begin bargaining for their first collective agreement.

“We welcome these new members to our Union and look forward to working with them through the collective bargaining process to achieve gains that other Metro workers currently enjoy,” said Local 175 President Shawn Haggerty.
