Between November 25 and December 10, UFCW Canada marks the 16 days of Action to End Gender-Based Violence. The United Nations’ UNiTE to End Violence Against Women Campaign theme for 2017 is:
Leave no one behind: Ending Violence Against Women and Girls
You can show your support by ‘oranging’ your clothes, your profile pics, and your spaces throughout the 16 days of action. Spread the word through social media with the hashtags #orangetheworld and #16days!
- One in three women will experience some form of abuse in her lifetime.
Every 6 days a woman is killed by an intimate partner. Statistics Canada estimates that this equates to 1 homicide every 6 days.
- Young women, girls, and persons identifying outside of the gender binary, experience violence at disproportionate rates. Support not-for-profits including women’s shelters and anti-violence against women organizations this month to honour the bravery of women who continue to survive and rebuild their lives after experiencing violence.
- A 2015 survey by the Canadian Women’s Foundation found that two-thirds of respondents weren’t able to identify that consent must be both positive (e.g. saying “yes”) and ongoing (e.g. continue during the sexual activity).
