Erie Glen Manor Retirement Residence Votes YES!

December 12, 2017

Congratulations to the workers at Erie Glen Manor Retirement Residence in Leamington who voted YES to joining the union.

The employees at the retirement residence wanted a number of improvements in their working conditions, which prompted them to contact the Union. The approximately 38 new members at Erie Glen Manor Retirement Residence join the ever-growing HOPE sector of Local 175. Members  work as:

  • RPNs,
  • cooks,
  • dietary aides,
  • housekeepers, and;
  • team leaders.

These workers were already part of an employee association at their workplace, but felt they had no real voice. They believed their input was neither wanted nor valued. The workers recognized that a contract, which is voted on by all the workers, will give them the voice they are seeking. A contract will also be valuable in removing favouritism and problems with scheduling of hours of work and vacations.

Workers want good contract language to provide:

  • job security,
  • a harassment free workplace, and;
  • wage improvements to be competitive with other homes in the area.

These workers want a grievance procedure with enforceable language put in place to allow them greater involvement, and to put an end to the current process of settling workplace issues.

Our newest members wanted the opportunity to have their voices heard, and they now have the strength of 70,000 members behind them as members of UFCW Locals 175 & 633.

Welcome to Your Union!
