Calls for the re-opening of a grocery store result in a new Food Basics for the residents of Porcupine.
July 7, 2021
Mississauga, ON – July 7, 2021 – The United Food & Commercial Workers (UFCW) Locals 175 & 633 is pleased to report that the call from the residents of Porcupine (near Timmins, ON) and the Union for Metro to re-open a grocery store at the Porcupine Mall have been heard. A Food Basics store will be opening at that location in the fall.
Over two years ago Metro ceased to operate its store at the Porcupine Mall however, Metro continued to own the facility resulting in the lack of a grocery store operating in the community. UFCW Local 175 was the representative for the workers at the closed location.
The area residents started a petition calling on Metro to reverse their decision to close the store. The petition was also supported by municipal council and the Union who advocated on behalf of the members with Metro to re-open a store at the Porcupine location.
“The announcement of a new Food Basics is a welcome one and a testament to the strength and unity of the Porcupine community” said Shawn Haggerty, President Local 175. “The Union disagreed with the employer’s decision to close and we are pleased that the residents of Porcupine will once again have a source to purchase groceries in their own community.”
