Bayfield Manor workers vote Union Yes!
August 17, 2018
Bayfield Manor is a nursing and retirement care residence that employs about 155 health care workers.
There were a number of issues brought these workers to the Union in the first place:
- A lack of respect from management;
- Lackluster benefits with a high premium;
- Wage inequality;
- Decreasing levels of care since new management took over;
- No pension;
- Working short, and;
- A lack of shift premiums.
This was the second vote to take place for these workers. Last year, the Union filed a Section 11 against the employer at the Ontario Labour Relations Board (OLRB). This means the Union believed the employer interfered with the employees’ ability to organize. As a result, the Board awarded the Union three captive audience meetings with the employees, and a second vote. That vote took place on August 15, 2018.
Employees at the Manor work in a number of different classifications. This includes: Registered Nurses (RNs), Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs), Personal Support Workers (PSWs), Dietary Aides, Housekeeping and Laundry Aides, and Activities Aides as well.
These new members now get to enjoy the Benefit of Being Union! Plus, they join the growing Health, Office & Professional Employees (HOPE) sector of UFCW Local 175. Members of the HOPE Sector include employees at retirement homes, nursing and long-term care facilities, substance abuse services, community care facilities, home care, and more.
Congratulations to our new Members, and welcome to Your Union!
