Almost 200 Stewards turned out for the 2011 London Stewards Seminar held on October 29 & 30. The yearly conference provides a weekend of education, fun and fundraising for our hardworking stewards. View photos here.

President Shawn Haggerty spoke to the Stewards about changes to the regional setup of the Local Union as well as the recent Ontario election and the importance of staying involved in the political process. Director Paul Jokhu gave an overview of the last year in the South West region including the successful recouping of more than $900,000 of members’ lost money through the grievance and arbitration procedure.

In light of a number of recent suicides by local teenagers, Secretary-Treasurer Teresa Magee asked Egale Canada – a national Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) human rights organization – to make a presentation to the Stewards on the subject. Ryan Dyck of Egale spoke to the group about the importance of recognizing that the LGBT community, and youth in particular, are faced with bullying and violence on a regular basis. Every member deserves a safe space to work in and as stewards who have a role in ensuring the rights of every member are upheld, there are resources available to you. If you or a member is dealing with this kind of bullying at work or home visit to start. A list of other links & resources is available here.

Members throughout the region were able to purchase tickets over the last month to win one five top draw prizes including a 51” TV and an iPad2, which were drawn at the seminar. Those ticket sales combined with the overwhelming generosity of the Stewards purchasing more raffle tickets for a variety of great prizes brought the weekend fundraising total to more than $25,000!

Thank you to everyone who attended for your participation and generosity.
