The 21st Annual Leukemia Gala took place on Friday, June 11, 2010 in downtown Toronto. UFCW members and staff from across the country along with representatives of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada (LLSC) and corporate sponsors, were treated to a great dinner with lots of entertainment in the name of a great cause. Herbie Kuhn (the ‘voice of the Toronto Raptors’) emceed the event and shared his reasons for participating in the LLSC’s Team in Training marathons.

Executive Assistant Harry Sutton presented the Local Union’s grand total with the help of Ted Dawes, who raised $18,500 himself this year with his Ted at your Door campaign. Members helped Locals 175 & 633 raise $350,000 in the last year.

“I’m very proud to be part of an organization with such generous volunteers and members,” said President Shawn Haggerty. “We can absolutely make a difference when we all work together to create better futures for our families and I look forward to seeing everyone out at events in the coming year.”

UFCW Local 12R24, representing workers at the Beer Store across the country, raised an astounding total of $1, 065, 412.24 through their annual bottle drive. Each year many volunteers help collect returns outside the Beer Store on the weekend following the May 24 long weekend.

The year’s total for all of UFCW Canada set a record at $1, 914, 262 for a 21-year total of $21, 773, 802. The UFCW continues to be the single largest donor to the LLSC and funds go to support a number of projects, services and research as well as research prizes such as the UFCW Canada Award for Leukemia Research.
