The closure at Maplehurst Bakeries will result in job loss for approximately 182 people of which 171 are Unionized workers belonging to the United Food & Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 175.
“The workers at Maplehurst Bakeries began the new year expecting to continue to work hard at their jobs. This news is a devastating blow to them and the community of Cobourg,” said UFCW Local 175 President, Shawn Haggerty. “Our Members have dedicated years to this employer and deserve better.”
The Union will meet with the employer as soon as possible to discuss the closure and its impact on the workers.
“We will take action to help deal with the impact of the job loss,” said President Haggerty. “Our Union will take whatever reasonable steps we can to help our Members in the face of this decision to cease operations.”
UFCW Locals 175 & 633 represent over 70,000 workers in all workplace sectors including Industrial Food Manufacturing, Retail, Healthcare and Hospitality.
