14th Annual UFCW Local 175 Health Care Conference
April 19, 2016
On April 14 and 15, 2016, the 14th Annual UFCW Local 175 Health Care Conference brought together Stewards from community, retirement, and long-term care facilities across the province.
Over the two days, topics covered included arbitration decisions, Hospital Labour Disputes Arbitration Act (HLDAA) awards, and legislation, and informative sessions focusing on mental well-being and stress in the workplace.
President Haggerty welcomed the delegates to the conference and spoke about the many concerns facing our health care members and the wider health care system. Before wrapping up, President Haggerty and Secretary-Treasurer Kelly Tosato presented Local 175 member William Norman with a cheque for $625 as part of the organizing honorarium incentive program, and thanked him for his assistance in helping other workers achieve union certification with the Local.
The Honorable Minister of Labour, Kevin Flynn, spoke to the delegates on day one about the importance of health and safety at work, and the progress he hopes to make in his role as Labour Minister.
Town hall sessions addressed health and safety and workers’ compensation concerns, as well as separate forums for workers in community health and those in retirement and long-term care facilities.
Thank you to all who attended for your participation and for your ongoing dedication as Stewards. See you next year!
