Bill 168 passes second reading

On October 20, 2009, the workplace violence bill passed second reading in the Ontario legislature.  Bill 168 would amend the Occupational Health & Safety Act to recognize workplace violence and harassment as hazards that must be prevented.

The Legislature’s Standing Committee on Social Policy will now address the Bill with further debate.

“We are happy to see the Bill pass its first and second reading,” says Shawn Haggerty, president of Local 175. “Our Local Union fully supports this Bill but we hope to see improvements made to it as well.”

Activists may get a chance to make further proposals for amendments to the bill if the Committee opens their discussion to public hearings. The labour movement and families of workplace violence victims still want to see a number of improvements made.

  • Include the threat of violence and harassment in the definition of workplace violence
  • Legal role and training for Joint Health & Safety Committee (JHSC) members.
  • Specific regulation detailing prevention measures and guidelines regarding the application of law.
