Airline workers in Sioux Lookout ratify successfully

Members working at Bearskin Airlines in Sioux Lookout secured a new three-year contract after voting on a negotiated settlement on March 24, 2009.

  • Wages increase by 31 cents per hour in year one, 32 cents per hour in year two and another 32 cents per hour in the third year of the contract term.
  • Those workers assigned as Training Agents will receive a shift premium of 50 cents per hour for all hours so worked.
  • Extra hours of work will be offered to full-time employees in order of seniority. In addition, full-time may bank up to 64 hours of overtime per year and part-time may bank up to 32 hours.
  • Improved language ensures no members of the bargaining unit will suffer a reduction in hours because of the hiring of co-op students.
  • New language establishes provisions for part-time to accrue seniority following probation, job filling and qualifying tests, and shift trades.
  • Workers may bank up to six statutory holidays, up from the previous five, that can be used until the following April.
  • Full-time workers may bank up to four sick days, up from three, and part-time sick bank increases to two days.
  • The company will match employee contributions of up to an improved 4 per cent for those with 10 years of service.

Members at Belmont Meats vote on negotiated settlement

The more than 100 members working at Belmont Meats in Weston, in the North West area of Toronto, will benefit from a new collective agreement ratified at a meeting held March 22, 2009. The three-year negotiated settlement has no concessions and brings the following improvements:

  • Active employees will receive a one-time lump sum payment of $400 within two weeks of ratification.
  • Subsequent wage increases are 20 cents per hour for all wages and classifications as of February 15, 2010 at which time a new progression grid for General Labour will be in effect. All wages and classifications receive another 20 cent per hour increase as of February 14, 2011.
  • The employer will contribute 30 cents per hour toward the Canadian Commercial Workers Industry Pension Plan (CCWIPP) Stabilization Fund as of December 1, 2009.
  • Company contributions to the workers group health insurance plan increase by 4 cents per hour in the second year of the contract, and by another 4 cents per hour in the third year of the term.
  • Dental plan contributions increase to 37 cents per hour over the duration of the deal.
  • The company will increase its contribution to the Local 175 Training & Education Fund to $5,500, up from $5,000.
  • Language addresses parking issues, enhanced severance and advance notice to the Union for changes to rules and policies.
  • Additional language ensures the company cannot negotiate with employees individually or collectively and must instead deal with the Union.

Breakaway Satellite community health care workers ratify new contract

Members working at the Breakaway Satellite Opiate Addiction Services facility in Toronto met on March 12, 2009, to ratify a new negotiated settlement. Workers  at the methadone treatment and counseling clinic benefit from the following improvements in the four-year deal:

  • Wages will increase as per the Ontario Local Health Integration Network (LHIN).
  • The negotiating committee successfully bargained for more money for the Drug Screen Technician classification.
  • Mileage reimbursement for workers using their own vehicles for work purposes increases to 45 cents per kilometer, up from 30 cents.
  • Family Day has been added to the list of paid holidays.
  • Professional development provisions, which entitle each worker to a maximum of 10 paid days leave per year, now provides for a reimbursement maximum of up to $1,000, up from the previous $500.

Colonial Cookies workers vote in favour of three-year deal

The 350 members  at the A&M Cookie CompanyColonial Cookies – in Kitchener have achieved a new three-year collective agreement after meeting for a ratification vote on March 15, 2009. The settlement comes following the announcement last year that Colonial Cookies parent company filed for bankruptcy protection.

  • Wages increase by 1 per cent as of February 28, 2010 and by 2 per cent in 2011.
  • Contributions to the workers’ dental plan increase by 5 cents per hour effective March 19, 2009, and another 5 cents per hour in 2010.
  • Language establishes that should the employer change its name, they will recognize Local 175 as the sole bargaining agent.

Colonial Retirement workers ratify

On March 9, 2009, the 28 members at the Colonial Retirement Residence in Whitby, secured a new contract. The full and part-time members benefit from a number of improvements in the three-year deal, including the following:

  • Wages increase twice per year for the duration of the contract for a total increase of 6.5 per cent.
  • Full-time workers receive a uniform allowance of $110 per year and part-time receive $55 per year, both effective in 2009. The amounts increase to $130 for full-time and $65 for part-time as of 2010.
  • The employer agrees to contribute $350 to the Local 175 Training & Education Fund in each year of the contract.

Credit Union workers vote on new contract

At a vote held March 23, 2009, members working at four Hald-Nor Community Credit Union facilities in Caledonia, Cayuga, Hagersville and Simcoe, achieved a new contract. Highlights of the three-year deal include:

  • Progression and end rates all increase by 25 cents per hour in each year of the contract term.
  • Family Day is added as a Paid Holiday in the contract language.

Holiday Inn workers in Trenton ratify first collective agreement

The 40 new members at the Holiday Inn, Trenton, have secured their first contract after a ratification meeting was held March 11, 2009. Workers benefit from the following improvements negotiated in the one-year deal:

  • Wages increase by between 25 cents and 80 cents per hour depending on classification.
  • Workers receive four paid sick days per year.
  • New language provides for a grievance procedure and a sunset clause on discipline.
  • The employer will supply uniforms for most classifications and overtime will be paid for hours worked over 40 hours per week.
  • Hours of work will be scheduled by seniority.

Independent Linen workers vote on three-year contract

Local 175 members working at Independent Linen in Ottawa met on March 18, 2009, to review and vote on a new collective agreement. The negotiated settlement has a three-year time frame and includes both monetary and language improvements for the more than 40 bargaining unit members. Highlights include the following:

  • Members receive a lump sum payment in the first year of $300 for unclassified and $400 for classified workers.
  • Second year increases are 20 cents per hour for unclassified workers and 25 cents per hour for classified. Both classified and unclassified receive an increase of 25 cents per hour in the third year.
  • Vision care coverage increases to $170, up from $150, per 24-month period.
  • Company contributions toward the health & welfare plan increase to $145 per year, up from $130, and pension contributions increase to $2.40 per week, up from $2.25.
  • Workers with 22 years of service receive an additional sick day per year.
  • Family Day has been added as a Statutory Holiday in the contract language and workers with 27 years of service or more receive six weeks paid vacation.
  • New language addresses stewards, union representation and the negotiating committee.
  • Improved language establishes that employees no longer have to attend a funeral to qualify for bereavement leave.

Loeb Merivale members meet to ratify new deal

On March 22, 2009, members at the Loeb Merivale store in Ottawa met to vote on a negotiated settlement. The more than 90 workers secured the following improvements:

  • Full-time workers receive a lump sum payment of $1,500 in the first year, an increase of 30 cents per hour in each of the next four years, and a $1,000 lump sum in the sixth year of the contract term.
  • Part-time workers receive a lump sum of $400 plus 30 cents per hour in the first year, 30 cents per hour in years two and three and the equivalent of a 50 cent per hour increase paid out in lump sums in the final three years of the deal.
  • In addition, there are new shift premiums paid to workers assigned to work express cash or those assigned to relieve a department manager.
  • Company contributions to the workers’ dental plan increase to 34 cents per hour, up from 31 cents, and the employer’s rate of contribution to the pension plan increases to 65 cents per hour, up from 40 cents.
  • Full-time workers benefit from improved sick leave of 48 hours per year, up from 40, and there is an increase to bereavement leave entitlement.
  • Language establishes Family Day as a Statutory holiday and recognition of any newly proclaimed holiday in the future.
  • Stewards are provided with a ½ hour paid time to have an introductory meeting with each new employee.
  • The safety boot allowance increases to $85 per year.
  • The employer will make a financial contribution to the Local 175 Training & Education Fund.

Maple Leaf workers take two-year deal

Following last year’s Listeria outbreak in the Maple Leaf facility on Bartor Road, the company and union met to negotiate a new collective agreement that sees the workers through the next two years. The February 28th ratification brings the 300 members of the bargaining unit some financial and benefit improvements in the short-term. The short duration of the deal should allow Maple Leaf time to stabilize its operations at the plant and leave the membership with the ability to renegotiate in the very near future with a more financially stable company.

  • Improvements include wage increases for full-time workers of 20 cents per hour for all production workers and $1 per hour for all maintenance workers as of January 15, 2009. A subsequent increase next year improves the production workers’ rates by 35 cents per hour and maintenance rates by $1 per hour.

  • The part-time rate increases by $1.50 per hour effective ratification. - In addition, all employees receive a $300 lump sum payment following ratification.

  • The employer will contribute 10 cents per hour to the Canadian Commercial Workers Industry Pension Plan (CCWIPP) Stabilization Fund. This amount increases to 30 cents per hour effective December 31, 2009.

  • Company contributions to the dental plan increase to 32 cents per hour as of ratification and again to 33 cents per hour on January 15, 2010.

  • A newly enhanced severance package provides a greater benefit than the Employment Standards Act (ESA) provides for, in the event of a plant closure.

Family Resource workers achieve two-year deal

Local 175 members working at the Military Family Resource Centre in London, achieved a new two-year deal at a meeting held March 13, 2009.

  • Wages increase by 2 per cent in each year of the contract.
  • Banked over time must be paid out within 30 days of year end.
  • Workers now receive Family Day as a paid holiday and bereavement leave improves to provide five days, up from three, for the death of an immediate family member.
  • The scope of the bargaining unit now includes offices in Windsor, Hamilton and Cambridge.

Members at Parkdale Community Health Centre in Toronto

The 24-member bargaining unit at Parkdale Community Health Centre in Toronto has secured a new three-year collective agreement. The community health care workers met on March 23, 2009, to discuss the terms of the negotiated settlement and vote. The ratified deal includes:

  • The job of Case Manager is added to the Community Health Outreach Worker classification and wages for all classifications will be adjusted as determined by the Ontario Local Health Integrated Network (LHIN).
  • The company will contribute up to a maximum of $3,600 per year toward an employee’s RRSP (calculation of payment detailed in contract). In addition, the employer agrees to pay a one-time sum of $400 to each employee’s RRSP on or before March 31, 2009.
  • Workers incurring mileage for work while using their own vehicles receive reimbursement of 45 cents per kilometer, up from the previous 35 cents.
  • New language establishes a Labour Management Committee that will meet to discuss issues in the workplace in the interest of maintaining good lines of communication and a better work environment for everyone.
  • Workers receive Family Day as a paid holiday.

Children’s home workers ratify three-year contract

The 10-member bargaining unit working at Young Star House in Emo, achieved a new three-year deal following a ratification vote on a negotiated settlement. Members at this children's residence provide residential and support services to children under the jurisdiction of the Child and Family Services Act. The successful March 25th vote secures the following improvements:

  • Workers receive significant wage increases retroactive to the expiry of the previous contract.
  • Those employees with more than five years continuous service receive a service premium of 1 per cent per year compounded on the five-year rate.
  • Family Day is added as a paid holiday.
  • Improved language provides workers assigned to attend training or workshops at Young Star House receive pay of $11.01 per hour.
  • The workers will now participate in the UFCW Benefit Trust Fund including: Life Insurance, AD&D, Extended Health benefits, vision care and eye exams, drug card, hearing aid coverage, and other provisions.
