Community Involvement

President Shawn Haggerty and all staff of Locals 175 & 633 UFCW Canada encourage every member to participate in fundraising and cultural activities in their communities.

The Community Action Network (CAN), founded in January 2006, is made up of Locals 175 & 633 staff and members who are proud of Canada’s union tradition. CAN aims to unite our members through their diversity. Many Locals 175 & 633 members already belong to groups within their own communities and CAN will more formally link our Local Unions with those diverse groups across Ontario.

The official charity of the Local is the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada (LLSC – formerly the Leukemia Research Fund of Canada or LRFC). In 2007, the Local donated $375,000 to the very worthy cause. The total of all UFCW Canada contributions was well over one million dollars.

Events continue all year long. Many members organize fundraisers in their workplaces and some involve the entire communities. Check the events calendar to see what’s coming up next.

The proceeds from events such as golf tournaments, canoe races, walk-a-thons, barbecues, raffles, charity dinners as well as candle, lunch bag and thermos sales go directly to the LLSC. We also hold an annual Motorcycle Ride for the Cure - visit www.ufcwrideforacure.ca for more information.

Local staff and members also raise money and take donations for other charitable associations such as women and family shelters, housing programs and clothing drives.

To purchase a lunch bag or thermos (pictured above) for $10 (each), please contact your Union Rep or e-mail us at membership@ufcw175.com.

If you have any fundraising ideas please contact your Union Rep and let them know. The Union can help you organize larger events and make sure the money gets to the LLSC or whichever charity or person for whom you are raising the funds.
